As skepticism of processed foods grows, plant-based milk brands embrace simpler recipes

Oat milk brand Planet Oat debuted its Humble Edition Oatmilk formulation as consumers increasingly examine ingredient decks and policymakers target certain food additives, dyes and ultra-processed foods.

The new Humble Edition Oatmilk contains five ingredients: water, oats, banana puree, sea salt and baking soda, and is formulated without oils, gums or added cane sugar, according to the company.

“We recognize that consumers have varied tastes and needs, with a growing segment looking for simpler, more approachable products,” a Planet Oat spokesperson said. “Inspired by homemade oatmilk recipes, Humble Edition Oatmilk was developed to expand consumer choices while delivering the smooth, creamy texture and great taste Planet Oat is known for across our portfolio.”

Achieving a smooth, creamy texture proved to be one of the biggest formulation challenges. The spokesperson said removing ingredients commonly used to deliver body and mouthfeel required a different approach.

“We achieved this balance through a five-ingredient recipe: pairing oatmilk (water and oats) with a touch of banana puree for smoothness, sea salt for flavor, and baking soda to perform as a natural mineral buffer,” the spokesperson said.

Planet Oat said banana puree was inspired by homemade oat milk recipes and serves multiple functions in the final product, including a light sweetness resulting in 4 grams of sugar per 8 ounce serving.

A growing trend of minimal plant-based milk formulations

The launch comes as consumer expectations in plant-based milk continue to evolve beyond replacing dairy. Planet Oat’s Humble Edition follows a broader clean-label movement in plant-based milk as brands like Malk and Elmhurst 1925 shorten ingredient lists and use fewer additives to appeal to consumers.

Malk Organic’s Original Oat Milk is devoid of additives like gums and oils with an ingredient list containing filtered water, organic oats and Himalayan pink salt, according to the company.

Similarly, Elmhurst 1925’s Unsweetened Milk Oats contains water, oats and salt and is free from gums, fillers and emulsifiers.

Also, Oatly’s 4 Ingredient Oatmilk is made with water, oats, sea salt and citrus fiber and claims the product contains no oils or fortifications.

According Planet Oat, shoppers increasingly want products that balance taste and texture with recognizable ingredients and shorter labels.

“Consumer expectations have evolved from finding an everyday dairy alternative to seeking out oat milks that deliver exceptional taste and texture,” the spokesperson said. “Today’s shoppers want options that fit seamlessly into their routines, whether they prioritize creaminess for coffee, everyday versatility or short ingredient lists.”

Looking ahead, Planet Oat sees continued fragmentation within the oat milk category as brands tailor products to different usage occasions and consumer priorities.

“The oat milk category is diversifying to cater to consumers’ needs, as oat milk has become a staple with broad appeal,” the spokesperson said. “The greatest growth opportunities lie in offering choices, delivering options for culinary and coffee usage occasions alongside simple, minimal-ingredient varieties for everyday drinking.”
