Archer Daniels Midland Company, a leading ingredients company, last week signed a license agreement with US biotechnology company Lifeline Technologies for phytosterol technology. The proprietary technology has applications for expanded uses of phytosterols and phytostanols in foods and beverages. Phytosterols are natural plant extracts currently used primarily in fat-based retail food products. Recent studies have shown that phytosterols may reduce cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. "This new technology will allow us to extend the benefits of heart-healthy phytosterols into many new food applications, including beverages, yogurts, and low-fat foods," said Tony DeLio, president of ADM Nutraceutical and Protein Specialties Divisions.
