US food safety product company Neogen Corporation announced on Monday that it has completed the acquisition of Gene-Trak Systems, a supplier of foodborne pathogen detection products. Neogen paid $3.5 million for Gene-Trak that had revenues of $3 million last year. "Gene-Trak's testing system will be particularly beneficial to larger Neogen customers, such as commercial laboratories and major food processors, who require a high volume of sample throughput when testing for foodborne bacteria." said James Herbert, Neogen's president. Gene-Trak recently introduced a new automated testing system that will allow the analysis of up to 200 samples in less than 3 hours. Gene-Trak's pathogen detection products are based on DNA probe technology.
