A new product from Cargill Dow is reportedly the first commercially viable, all-natural confectionery film and rigid packaging alternative.
Unveiled at a recent trade show in Germany, NatureWorks is a natural polymer made from annually renewable resources, such as corn, and is fully compostable in industrial and municipal compost facilities.
According to Cargill Global Packaging Director, Jim Hobbs, the film's beneficial confectionery attributes include 20 per cent higher twist retention for twist-wrap and the stiffness and clarity for rigid packaging applications.
"Films made with NatureWorks exhibit such fine clarity and gloss that technical experts often mistake the film for a polystyrene or cellophane," he says.
The film is also said to have a high resistance to most oils and fats used in food products.
