The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published a guide to the provisions of the 1990 Food Safety Act and other UK legislation covering the composition and labelling of foods, chemical safety, food hygiene, control of foodstuffs and trading and marketing standards.

The September 2002 edition of the Food Standards Agency Food Law Guide codifies all relevant EU and UK food legislation and provides explanatory notes and overviews of different food law areas.

Only intended as a general guide, the FSA stresses that for definitive information companies must consult the appropriate Act, Order, Regulation or Code of Practice.

In a statement this week, the FSA comments that the legislation listed in the guide applies only to England and Wales, however; separate legislation applies to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Where this is not the case it is stated in the guide.

Wherever possible the guide states which EU rules are implemented in food law in England and Wales.
