Carrefour opens new logistics centre

The French retail giant Carrefour has opened a new logistics platform in Spain which will serve its 30 hypermarkets in Spain, plus four others in Portugal. The new facility will hold 14,000 different products.

Carrefour, the French retailing giant, has opened a new logistics centre in Spain which will serve its stores in a number of major Spanish cities, and in Portugal.

The centre, based in Azuqueca de Henares, cost Carrefour €33 million, and will allow it to service 30 hypermarkets in Spain and four in Portugal. The warehouse facility is 61,000 square metres.

Some 300 people will work at the centre, which can accommodate 88,400 pallets. It will hold 14,000 different products and will be open 24 hours a day.

The new logistics warehouse will complement Carrefour's existing Spanish distribution facilities - some 440,000 square metres of warehouse space, including frozen food warehouses in Barcelona and Madrid, an electrical goods facility in Guadalajara, one for smaller supermarket outlets in Barcelona and one for the online business, Carrefouronline, in San Agustín de Guadalix near Madrid.

As with all of Carrefour's other logistics centres, the management of the new facility will be sub-contracted - in this case to Hays Logistics. Carrefour said that this was the most efficient method of managing the sites.
