CAP pressure on UK farmers

Reform of the Common Agricultural Policy is just one of a host of pressures for change on British farmers, the president of the UK National Farmers Union (NFU) Ben Gill told the union's annual conference earlier this week.

The recently announced reform plans get top billing at the event with an address by European Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler and a question and answer session devoted to the subject.

But the imminent enlargement of the EU, World Trade Organisation talks and globalisation are other issues that the industry must face up to, Mr Gill told hundreds of farmer delegates.

Mr Gill said: "Every year we seem to face ever greater pressure for change and our conference examines all these areas. There are several strands but one key objective - sustainable farming based on profitability.

"There are many things that government, the regulators and the rest of the food chain can do to help in this quest," he added.

On the table at the conference - that took place on Tuesday and Wednesday in Kenilworth, UK - was how British farmers could deliver in a global marketplace, focusing on adding value to primary products and building trust in the food chain.
