The new Sugardrop tomato, said to be “sweet as a peach”, is a hybrid of two tomato varieties and may tempt people who find the taste of ordinary tomatoes too sharp to think again about eating the fruit.
The development of the new variety took two years and involved trials with some 3000 different tomato types. Due to the cut-throat world of tomato splicing, the supermarket is keeping the identity of the cross-bred varieties under wraps.
The other newcomer, Moruno, is said to have “think, juicy, fragrant flesh,” and “a complex, aromatic flavour that lingers for a while on the tastebuds.”
