COP-15 must agree on funding for agriculture

IFPRI's Gerald Nelson explains the importance of leaders reaching a political agreement at the COP-15 climate talks that would channel resources from the developed to the developing world, and protect farmers and the food supply from the effects of climate change.

Speaking to FoodNavigator.com from Copenhagen, Nelson said an additional $7 billion is required each year just to address the effects of climate change. This should be used for research into increase crop productivity and resilience, infrastructure and irrigation.

This, he believes, should come from a variety of sources, including public sector funding and mitigation funding from the private sector.
