Bakery ingredients supplier CSM UK has announced the launch of its range of frostings designed to help bakers save time.

The company said its Craigmillar frostings make suitable toppings or fillings for baked goods, especially “American style products” such as brownies and cup cakes.

Target markets

It added the ingredient could have applications as a filling for whoopee pies, the latest bakery craze from the US. Marks and Spencer was the first UK supermarket to launch a range of whoopee pies last month and sold over 20,000 units in the first weekend.

The firm may also look to profit from strong consumer demand for the cupcake which is experiencing something of a revival in recent years.

Convenience

CSM product group manager David Astles said the range was created for time-pressured bakers. As these frostings can be used direct from the pail, they are easy to use and give consistently good results, making them particularly appealing to the smaller baked good manufacturer who may lack a large skilled staff, he explained.

Astles said that the frostings, which consist of icing sugar, fondant, and fats for aeration, were a year in development and would be released on the market next month.

The firm said the range builds upon its past successes with icing and toppings ventures such as its Crembel Fudge icings. And the new frostings, said CSM, contain natural flavours in vanilla, chocolate and caramel varieties to appeal to clean label trends.

The range is claimed to offer a shelf-life of several months and is available in 10kg pails. CSM said the range needs no special storage requirements and could be stored at ambient temperatures.

The ingredients supplier was not prepared to enter into specifics about its finances, but it said forecasts for the coming year were “very buoyant”.
