The processing kit supplier said it developed the extra large machine to help food processors handle incoming products that are increasingly bulky as a result of industry efforts to cut down on interim packaging.
Large meat processors handling bulk meat in film or Euro crates and meat boxes are expected to be most interested in the new X4 800XL x-ray - which is used to detect metal pieces, large bones and other contaminates. In addition, Loma said the x-ray would be of interest to processors of large sacks of food ingredients or blocks of cheese.
The X4 800XL x-ray is based on existing Loma x-ray machines but incorporates a large aperture infeed system to handle bigger products.
FDA requirements
Trade marketing manager, James Chrismas, told FoodProductionDaily.com that the biggest challenge when developing the extra-large version was achieving compliance with FDA wash down requirements.
This is because the machine has to be thoroughly drainable to deal with the daily wash downs in meat processing plants while at the same time be sufficiently sealed to prevent x-rays from escaping.
The system also had to be built to withstand daily exposure to tough industrial conditions. Meeting the IP66 environment specifications, Chrismas said the new x-ray system is designed to be “the last one standing”.
As for other technical features, Loma said the X4 800XL x-ray has a normal belt speed of up to 50m/min and incorporates an industrial grade PC and front access USB port.
Loma said it has built a dedicated manufacturing and assembly line for the X4 800XL x-ray at its Farnborough, UK, headquarters. Simon Spencer, managing director of Loma Systems, said this “will allow Loma to offer greatly reduced build times and keep abreast of any sudden changes in the way our customers’ start to receive their raw materials.”
