Current EU meat inspection measures do not address human health risks - EFSA

Speaking at the FoodProductionDaily.com Meat Technology Conference at Anuga FoodTec 2012 in Cologne, Dr Marta Hugas, the head of biological hazards at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), highlighted the urgent need for modernisation in European meat inspection.

Dr Hugas said that EFSA is working to identify the current European meat inspection measures that are not fit for purpose and offer ideas for alternative methods to protect consumers.

“It’s still based on more than 100 years ago technology, it needs to be updated and modernised according to the current trends in food safety,” she said.
