Valio re-enters the baby food market with local milk products

Finnish ingredients and diary giant Valio will re-enter the baby food market with a new range of ready-to-serve baby food.

The company said it will launch a ‘comprehensive’ range of baby foods including porridges, gruels, and infant and weaning formula – all of which will be produced from fresh local milk at its Turenki plant.

"Valio has developed technology that enables us to produce baby foods from fresh Finnish milk so that we can offer Finns the opportunity to enjoy domestic ingredients and baby foods made in Finland," said Sami Nupponen, senior vice president, Fresh Food at Valio.

The Finnish milk and ingredients firm will be the only manufacturer in Finland to offer ready-to-serve infant formula, porridges and gruels.

The company said it will be launching the products solely in the Finnish market “for the time being”, but noted that launches in international markets are under consideration.

New range

Valio said its ‘Onni’ range of porridges and gruels will deliver a number of choices from both milk-based and non-milk selections.

The ingredients, including oats, wheat, rye and barley are also of Finnish whole grain origin – and many of the products will be additive free

The company also said its ‘Tuuti’ range of infant and weaning formula are made from fresh Finnish milk that is filtered to gain ‘all the essential and recommended amino acids’ from a fresh milk source.

Tiina Vuorinen brand manager at Valio said whilst maternal breast milk “is the best nutrition for infants”, the new products offer support for growth and development for the cases where breast feeding is not possible.
