The European Commission has granted a PGI (protected geographical indications) label to the traditional Catalan bread ‘Pa de Pagès Català’.

The bread made in Catalonia is now protected from product name misuse and imitation.

The PGI label covers agricultural products and foodstuffs closely linked to the geographical area. At least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation must take place in the area, the EC said.

The bread joins a list of more than 1,100 products already protected by the legislation.

Most of the bakery products entered in the PGI register are cakes and pastries from Germany, according to the EC.
