Intralytix gains approval for phage-based salmonella control

Intralytix has received regulatory approval for one of its phage-based products for controlling salmonella.

SalmoFresh received GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) recognition from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It is specifically designed for treating foods that are high risk for salmonella contamination such as red meat and poultry, prior to grinding.

SalmoFreshis an antimicrobial preparation for controlling salmonella enterica. The active ingredients are lytic bacteriophages that selectively and specifically kill salmonella, said Intralytix.

The company has two FDA/USDA approved phage-based products on the market: ListShield, effective at reducing or eliminating Listeria monocytogenes in food products, and EcoShield, for reducing or eliminating E.coliO157:H7 in red meat intended for grinding.

Dr Alexander Sulakvelidze, Intralytix’s chief scientist, said: “GRAS recognition will allow SalmoFresh to be put into immediate use by the food processing industry as a safe and effective approach for reducing the risk of foodborne salmonellosis.”
