Salmonella test system attains AOAC okay

A Salmonella test method from BioControl Systems has attained global certification.

The Assurance GDS Salmonella Tq mEHEC method has been approved by the AOAC’s Performance Tested Methods Program. The test uses immunomagnetic separation (IMS), molecular technology and food microbiology to attain results.

Rapid results

According to BioControl group product manager Geoff Bright, the Assurange GDS system provides results quickly and accurately.

The new enrichment procedure for Assurance GDS Salmonella utilizes a proprietary mEHEC enrichment,” he said. “When combined with  DNA amplification technology, it enables accurate detection of Salmonella from food and environmental samples in as little as 10 hours.”

Single sample

Further, the company’s technology enables producers, retailers, agencies and others to get Salmonella and E. coli results from a single sample. The speed of the results reportedly enables producers to release product and get back to business quickly, minimizing the financial impact of an incident.

The Assurance GDS does not require any additional hardware purchase to operate. The system includes all necessary equipment to perform the assay, including the company’s Rotor-Gene thermocylcer and a laptop computer with the Assurance GDS software

Other products

In addition to Salmonella, BioControl’s Assurange GDS platform includes assays for E coli O157:H7, Shiga Toxin Genes, Top 6 and 7 STEC, Listeria spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and Cronobacter. The company also provides ICON Dashboard, a software program that enables producers to manage their operation-wide sanitation program.

Demand for food safety testing equipment and technology is increasing annually. According to research firm Markets and Markets, global sales will top $14bn USD by 2018.
