EU recommends stricter dioxins, furan and PCB control
The recommendation (number 2013/711/UE) lists products which should be monitored, including free range and organic eggs, sheep and lamb livers, Chinese mitten crab, dried herbs and clays sold as food supplements.
It replaces Recommendation (number 2011/516/EU) stressing that the presence of dioxins, dioxin-like PCBs and other PCBs in food products must be monitored more.
Member States should perform, proportionate to their production, use and consumption of feed and food, random monitoring of dioxin presence, dioxin-like PCBs and non-dioxin-like PCBs, it said.
It requires that Member States and operators do investigations to find the source of contamination, take measures to reduce or eliminate it and communicate results to the European Commission and Member States.
