Eriez metal detection aims for product purity

Eriez pairs metal detectors with magnetic separators, creating systems aimed for processing operations looking to safeguard product purity.

The combination of the two types of machinery is intended to block foods, beverages and other products from metal contamination. According to the company, this “double-team” approach prevents metallized contaminants (such as fine ferrous and non-ferrous metal particals) from entering the processing stream.

Neither a metal detector nor a magnetic separator is 100% effective in removing contamination on its own,” said John Klinge, product manager for metal detection at Pennsylvania-based Eriez.  “The double-team combination results in as close to a perfect product yield as possible.”

Combination detection

Operating in conjunction, the magnetic separate takes out any ferrous contamination; the metal detector hones in on any ferrous missed by the magnet. The system also can tackle nonferrous metals, including aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel.

The company offers a broad range of magnetic separators and metal detectors engineered to work together. Eriez representatives can work with food industry clients to come up with the pairing best suited to the specific needs of a particular operation.

Safety compliance

Klinge said eradicating foreign objects is essential for food businesses to meet customer demands, and to comply with regulations coming from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other agencies.

Putting the double-team’ to work in your operation offers the best defense against dangerous metal contamination,” he said.

In addition to metal detectors and magnetic separators, Eriez manufactures vibratory feeders and conveyors. The equipment can handle a wide range of ingredients and finished food products.
