Waters Corporation has launched a data management system to boost productivity, workflow and compliance with regulations for laboratories.

The NuGenesis Lab Management System is an alternative to a traditional Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

The system lets food and beverage firms communicate across their laboratory operations and ensure consistency and efficiency across products, labs and countries.

It includes NuGenesis SDMS, a compliant-ready data repository, NuGenesis ELN, a flexible analytical electronic laboratory notebook, and NuGenesis Sample Management.

This ensures scientific data generated in the laboratory can be captured, indexed, and stored in a compliance-ready environment after its creation or change, said the firm.

Complying with FSMA

Garrett Mullen, senior product marketing manager, laboratory management informatics at Waters Corporation, said it is the beginning of the market for this type of technology in the industry.

“We see the system playing a part in the food safety plan of food and beverage companies preparing to comply with FSMA where a central theme is requiring more detailed record-keeping,” he told FoodQualityNews.com.

“When it comes time to be inspected you can find and produce records in quick time that are required by the regulators.

“We see more food and beverage firms seeking assistance in their systems to meet regulations.

“We are partnered with many food labs and large volume companies use the system to data-mine information for their own productivity. FSMA will see compliance for data management that is only going to increase over time.”

Product lifecycle support

NuGenesis Lab Management System combines synergistic data, workflow, and sample management capabilities to support the product lifecycle from discovery through to manufacturing.

It links data from the lab to the business with sample submission and results review, stability testing, scientific search, multi-vendor software connection, laboratory inventories, data retention and legal hold, and laboratory execution methods.

Advances include NuGenesis SampleShare, an optional web-client for sample submissions and results management and NuGenesis Stability, a protocol management and testing solution to facilitate the workflow across lab operations.

NuGenesis Connectors, a bi-directional link between lab systems and business applications and Paradigm Scientific Search, a scientific search tool for text, documents and science objects are included.

Mullen said most food testing labs communicate with their customers by email.

“Our system is designed to allow a customized way to tailor information, for example, if the customer wanted just essential information from a chromatography data system it is possible to extract specific content.

“It is a natural extension of lab data management. Our system has structures but you can extract information on your business and transmit it by PDF.”

The parameters can be configured depending on the customer environment.

Its data repository helps compliance with regulatory requirements such as the Food Safety Modernization Act and the US FDA 21 CFR Part 11.
