Synbiosis has launched the Chromogenic ID software module for the ProtoCOL 3 and Protos 3 colony counters.

The software counts and identifies any bacteria or yeast cultured on E&O chromogenic or Colorex plates and offers a presence or absence of bacteria based on colour detection.

A software module for the ProtoCOL 3 colony counter to identify microbes and count colonies cultured on CHROMagar plates was already available.

It analyses chromogenic agars from media supplier, E&O Laboratories, and CHROMagar. Synbiosis is working with other media suppliers to expand use of the software.

The firm said the subjectivity of colour identification is removed by using the software which prevents misidentification.

It added people using existing software would need to order the Chromogenic module.

The systems allow chromogenic colony identification by capturing colour images of colonies on chromogenic plates utilising patented red, blue and green lighting.

Pathogens including Acinetobacter, Candida, Klebsiella, Enterococcus, E.coli O157, Listeria, Salmonella, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio can be identified.
