Campbell Soup Company is recalling 355,000 cans of SpaghettiOs Original due to a potential choking hazard posed by pieces of red plastic found in some cans.

Affected 14.2 ounce SpaghettiOs Original product has a date of February 22, 2017 which is stamped on the base of the can, and a UPC code of 51000 22432 printed under the bar code.

The plastic material is from parts of the can lining which may peel off. The cans were produced at a plant in Paris, Texas.

Campbell Soup Company said it had received consumer complaints about the issue which is limited to the US.

Responding to posts on its Facebook page, the firm said it checks all products before they are sent to stores.

“For example, SpaghettiOs passes through metal detectors, magnets and x-rays. In this case, because the plastic is actually part of the can lining which has separated, our usual foreign material checks would not have identified the issue.

“We also believe that parts of the lining may have separated after the product left our plant. We are taking steps to review our processes, and the way our cans are manufactured, to ensure an issue such as this does not happen again.

It advised people who had bought the product not to eat it and return it to the store where it was purchased for an exchange or full refund.
