‘Consumers are becoming more sensitive to packaging and its impact on the environment’

Allboxes Direct, which works with Baked By Melissa, Milkbar, Farmigo, and Jacques Torres Chocolates, has launched a bio based polymer packaging to replace petroleum based polymers for the manufacture and production of plastic packaging.

The company, based in New York, US, offers multiple alternatives for insulated packaging to extend the shipping time for perishable products as well as bio based products which are certified compostable.

Mitch Weinreb, managing director and CEO, Allboxes Direct, told ConfectioneryNews, green options in the past have been alternatives, although not cost competitive but this product meets compost standard ASTM-6400 and can be cost competitive.

As the organic food sector has grown, our customers have always inquired about environmentally friendly options,” said Weinreb.

We knew we had to pursue this area so we can have as many packaging options as possible. Once we discovered the manufacture for the polymer, it opened up a vast array of opportunities.

It changes the dynamic for our company as we are now positioned as experts within the packaging market as opposed to a commodity driven supplier. This can lead to explosive revenue growth, as so many opportunities are being uncovered. We have a packaging engineer on our staff. His design and creativity combined with this new material is a game changer for Allboxes.”

E commerce

According to Weinreb, e commerce is continuing to grow, which will keep the demand for packaging at a strong level.

“It is all about convenience. Consumers are becoming more sensitive to packaging and its impact on the environment,” he added.

The company now plans to expand the number of sales staff it has throughout the country but it is not planning to enter the emerging markets in China or the Middle East and Africa.

If we can get the word out about bio based packaging, it will grow exponentially,” said Weinreb.

We prefer to source and distribute our products domestically. It enables us to control quality along with making sure our products meet industry standards.”
