The two companies are believed to have entered into negotiations over the possibility of joining forces to provide a platform for PHW Group to start selling fresh fish.
It is a deal that would be regarded as a win-win for both companies.
The news was first reported online by the German trade magazine Lebensmittel Praxis and PHW Group has since confirmed it is in talks with the Icelandic fishing company.
PHW Group spokesperson Maria Große Böckman said the talks were “much too young to provide comment on the progress” of the venture, but added it would take the company around six months to be “able to assess this new venture”.
PHW Group is one of the largest poultry producers in Germany, with headquarters located in Rechterfeld, north-west Germany.
Beef, pork and poultry remain the favoured types of meat in Germany, and fish has never been above these forms of meat. This is down to the fact that many German supermarkets don’t stock fresh fish. However, according to a study by Canada’s agriculture department, seafood is becoming more popular in Germany thanks to more thought being shown to the health issues related to the consumption of red meat.
PHW Group produces top-quality poultry, turkey and duck, under the brand name of Wiesenhof. The company has an annual turnover of approximately €2.3bn and employs around 6,000 staff.
