Price decrease for Maltese pork

As of yesterday (Monday 29 February), the wholesale price of all local pork sold by the Pig Breeders’ Cooperative Society of Malta dropped by €0.10 per kilogramme of carcase weight.

This difficult decision to reduce the price of the local product was taken despite the fact that production costs have not decreased and that this price cut will directly impact local pig farmers’ income,” a statement from the society explained.

As a result of this price reduction, it is hoped there will be either a maintained or increased uptake of Maltese pork among local processors, retailers, restaurateurs, hoteliers and consumers.

Falls a threat to families

Due to the drop in European pork prices last year, there has been an increased amount of imported cheaper pork from outside of Malta. Local pork sales have already seen a significant drop, according to the society, with local producers unable to afford to lose any more of the local market.

Further decreases could risk the livelihoods of several local families, said the group.

The pig breeders of Malta humbly urge local people and businesses to support their work by selecting local pork,” added the statement. “As with any local sector dependent on the local market, the Maltese pork sector cannot continue to exist without such support.
