Salt of the Earth launches sodium-cutting ingredient for meat products
The Israeli-based company claims its new sodium-reducer – the Umamix Bold – will “wow” consumers with its bold flavour. The all-natural food ingredient is made with sea salt, tomato concentrate, and a mushroom and seaweed extract. It is also free from monosodium glutamate and genetically-modified organisms, meaning companies can claim their product is made with clean ingredients.
“Consumers are aware of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) call to reduce sodium and, at the same time, they demand cleaner products with natural positioning,” said Revital Ben Shachar, marketing manager for Salt of the Earth.
“We don’t consume food just to feel satiety; we want so much more from our food today. For example, eating in a restaurant involves all of our senses – appearance and texture are not enough. A food must be healthful, look great and taste delicious. Umamix Bold has an exotic taste that can enhance the flavour of a variety of products.”
Sodium cut by 30%
The company claimed that the use of the Umamix Bold could easily reduce sodium levels. This, said the company, was proved after Salt of the Earth trialled the ingredient with one of the top three meat processing businesses in Israel. The company, which cannot be named for legal reasons, found flavour was enhanced and sodium was cut by 30% in its range of sausages.
