Food workers union backs Jeremy Corbyn

The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) has voiced strong support for embattled Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, after a wave of resignations from his shadow cabinet, including food and farming minister Kerry McCarthy.

The union’s intervention followed a flood of resignations from the shadow cabinet and widespread criticism of Corbyn’s leadership in the run up to the EU referendum.

BFAWU national president Ian Hodson said his members condemned the actions  of “a number of Labour MPs, who have chosen to start a civil war within their own party.

‘Unable to accept democracy’

“Since Jeremy Corbyn’s landslide election victory nine months ago, certain MPs [have been] unable to accept democracy …”

During his nine months as Labour Party leader, Corbyn had increased its membership massively, gained support from all sections of society, including students, the elderly, the disabled and “previously disillusioned trade unions”, said Hodson.

“His effective opposition has forced the government into u-turn, after u-turn on issues directly affecting ordinary people and he has performed solidly in local elections, winning important by-elections and mayoral elections, often increasing Labour’s vote share.”

Resignation of 17 shadow cabinet members

Hodson’s comments followed the resignation of 17 shadow cabinet members in protest against the sacking of shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn and allegations of poor leadership after the EU referendum.

McCarthy, the vegan Member of Parliament, for Bristol East, supported the UK’s continued membership of the EU.

Her replacement is York Central MP Rachael Maskell.
