Ancera has raised $8.9m to commercialize its single-cell transport technology by early next year.

The patented MagDrive technology, developed at Yale University, analyzes contamination in food sources in near real-time enabling rapid detection and quantification of microbial threats.

It powers the Piper platform by manipulating, sorting and enumerating viable pathogens directly from food samples, such as produce and poultry.

The Piper platform provides near real-time automated data collection and aggregation into algorithms.

Arjun Ganesan, co-founder and CEO of Ancera, said with the total of $12.3m raised in this round and the collaborations, it can ‘shift the status quo’ in the industry.

"Our ability to rapidly deliver microbial risk information will help the food industry continue to improve the safety and quality of its products through every stage of the production process.”

Glass Capital, an existing investor, led the funding round with Packers Sanitation Services (PSSI), which offers cleaning and sanitation services for the food industry and Metabiota, active in epidemic risk analytics.

“Ancera and Metabiota are a natural fit, as we are both committed to leveraging data to decrease pathogen risk in food systems and reduce the threat of a foodborne disease outbreak,” said Robert Mann, president and COO of Metabiota.
