Hardy Diagnostics introduces chromogenic culture media

Hardy Diagnostics has launched a product for use as a primary stool screening medium for isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella spp.

HardyCHROM SS NoPRO contains a proprietary antimicrobial that the firm claims eliminates the growth of Proteus spp.

Hektoen Enteric (HE) Agar was introduced almost 50 years ago to select for most Salmonella and Shigella.

Hardy Diagnostics said HE agar also allows the growth of Proteus which can lead to false positives.

The stool culture medium saves time and money by eliminating the need for lab staff to work up suspected Salmonella and Shigella only to find out it is Proteus.

Non-pathogenic organisms are ruled out based on colony colour.

Hardy Diagnostics manufactures over 2,700 products for the culture and identification of bacteria and fungi as well as reagents and media for molecular biology researchers.

The firm said more than 9,000 labs rely on it for supplies.

Hardy Diagnostics employs 325 people and has nine distribution centers in the US with manufacturing at its headquarters in Santa Maria, California and a new facility in Springboro, Ohio.

It acquired GG&B Company, which makes automated slide-staining equipment, last year.

The company was rebranded as QuickSlide, a division of Hardy Diagnostics, and continues to operate from Wichita Falls, Texas.

The QuickSlide GramPro 80 is capable of gram staining up to 80 slides per hour and is compact enough to fit on a lab counter top.

The GramPro 1 is for low volume use and stat procedures and the GramPro 40 is for mid-sized laboratories.
