Meat production in Finland reached record levels in 2016, driven by poultry growth.

According to statistics recorded by the Natural Resources Institute of Finland (Luke), 125 million (m) kilos of poultry meat was produced in the country last year, with broiler meat production, which makes up over 90% of output, increasing 7% compared to the previous year. The nation’s turkey meat production also saw an increase.

Overall, 404m kilograms (kg) of meat was produced last year, almost 2% more than in 2015 (397m kg).

Beef production increased slightly to just under 87m kg for the year. The number of slaughtered bulls fell, while the number of cows and heifers increased. According to Luke, at its highest level, beef production totalled around 125m kg in the mid-1980s.

Pork production amounted to just over 190m kg, down 1% on the previous year. This is significantly down from when pork production was at its height – at more than 217m kg – in 2008. Mutton production also rose 6% year-on-year.

The country also produced the largest number of eggs since 1995, with production growing for the fifth consecutive year and totalled just over 72m kg. Organic and cage egg production saw an increase, while the number of barn and free-range eggs fell. A total of 63% of all eggs were produced in enriched battery cages, 32% came from barn and free-range hen houses, and 5% were organic.
