Focus Games and eQuality Nutrition turn food hygiene into a game

A food hygiene game has been approved by the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) as a training resource.

The educational board game for up to 12 players is designed to test and reinforce knowledge delivered during food hygiene training courses.

It was developed by Focus Games and Brenda Black of eQuality Nutrition, a registered dietitian and food hygiene trainer around REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene course material.

Black said it will improve the learning experience for people in the food industry.

“Through my background of training people in the catering industry, community setting and nursing homes, I realised there was a need to improve training methods for basic food hygiene skills,” she said.

“After time away from formal education, trainees often felt inhibited about learning in a 'classroom' setting and then found it difficult to apply their knowledge in the kitchen/work place."

The Food Hygiene Game covers food hazards; personal hygiene; working environment; food pests; cleaning practices; introduction to HACCP and temperature controls.

The game focuses on a range of temperatures that a food handler must learn and remember such as core cooking and chill temperature.

It is for structured food hygiene training courses, education in schools or colleges, or informal learning and refresher training in hospitality or catering businesses.

“This is an excellent resource to facilitate learning in an interactive and fun approach. The game includes many key facts about food hygiene which the learners will find relevant when undertaking a food hygiene course,” said Jackie McCabe, director of training at REHIS.
