AHDB shares export plans with overseas officials for red meat sector

The UK’s Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has met with overseas government officials to set out key target markets and export strategies for the future.

Held at AHDB’s headquarters in Warwickshire, trade and investment officers from the Department of International Trade (DIT) listened to how AHDB plans to explore opportunities in the export market.

The DIT officials were given an overview of investment and trade leads in various countries and heard how AHDB can work with the government to exploit new opportunities.

One of the talks was conducted by AHDB’s senior export manager Susana Morris, who explored the opportunities of exporting red meat to Canada and the US.

US and UK trade talks for meat have not run so smoothly in recent months, with the UK refusing to compromise on its animal welfare and food safety standards by allowing products such as hormone-treated beef and antibiotic-washed chicken into the country.

The visit was part of the ‘Delivering through Sector Knowledge’ programme, which aims to help the DIT understand the dynamics of AHDB and other industry partners when it comes to exporting.

AHDB’s international market development director Phil Hadley said the overall aim was to grow its export markets.

This visit was extremely important as it allowed AHDB to share its research and knowledge of specific regions and countries with DIT colleagues,” said Hadley.

This Delivering through Sector Knowledge programme allows trade and investment officers to learn more about our work around exports and better understand the UK’s offering in a bid to sell our products on a global platform.”

AHDB recently invited officials from Ukraine to visit its offices to educate them about meat hygiene controls and food traceability in the UK.
