Available in more than 350 Tesco stores around the UK, the Beyond Burger will be priced at £5.50 and will be offered as a chilled and frozen option. The product will be stocked alongside animal-based proteins at the stores.
The move aims to tap the growing global demand for plant-based meats and the company claims its Beyond Burger is the first product that looks, cooks and tastes like beef.
The Beyond Burger’s meat-like texture is a blend of plant-based ingredients, including peas, beetroot, coconut oil and potato starch. It is also free of genetically modified organisms, soy and gluten.
Beyond Meat executive chair Seth Goldman revealed that despite the Beyond Burger launching in Tesco stores in August, UK consumers can get their hands on the product earlier.
“Bringing our innovative approach to merchandising to the UK, Tesco will sell The Beyond Burger in the chilled meat aisle alongside animal-based proteins. Similarly, one of London’s favourite burger concepts, Honest Burgers, will offer The Beyond Burger on-menu alongside their beef and chicken options,” said Goldman.
“This strategy has proven extremely successful in the US, and we are optimistic we’ll see a similar positive reaction in the UK.”
The Beyond Burger will be available from Honest Burgers’ King’s Cross site in London from 10 July.
“Our menu has always been based around simplicity and homemade quality. When we tried Beyond Meat’s plant-based burger, we were blown away,” said Tom Barton, Honest Burgers’ co-founder.
“It’s a very different thing to the vegan recipes we’re working on. It’s the best-quality plant-based burger we’ve tasted and we’re really excited to be the first burger business launching it.”
The Beyond Burger is present in more than 8,000 grocery stores and 10,000 restaurants in the US.
