This acquisition makes the Danish Crown Group the largest supplier of bacon in Europe.
“Clearly, with the new position, we have some unique opportunities to drive and develop the category, and thus the hard work really begins – not least in relation to the absolutely crucial integration of the company,” said Kasper Lenbroch, CEO of Tulip Food Company.
Baconspecialist Zandbergen was founded in 1984, and both production facilities and administration are located in the Amsterdam suburb of Haarlem. The company is planning to expand capacity significantly to improve production to meet customer needs. Zandbergen is primarily active in private label and operates mainly in the northern European markets of Holland, Germany and Sweden.
Danish Crown said: “Just as is the case with DK-Foods within pepperoni, Zandbergen is an extremely lean company that has a low degree of complexity and with a production based on very few basic concepts.”
“We are now well-equipped for the future and to fulfill our great ambitions in Danish Crown’s 4WD strategy,” added Lenbroch. “With the acquisition of DK-Foods earlier this spring, we became European market leader in pepperoni, and with the acquisition of Baconspecialist Zandbergen, the same applies to the very interesting bacon category. Now the task is to grow our business by at least DKR1bn to 2021.”
