Wind turbine installed at German poultry farm

EWT, the turbine supplier, has successfully installed the first wind turbine in Germany at a poultry farm, to help cut its high electricity tariffs.

The site, near Schöppingen, has high electricity consumption due to the cooling and heating of the poultry farm. EWT said the electricity of the wind turbine would mainly be used for the operations of the farm, and the surplus would be fed back into the grid.

The wind turbine would be used to offset local electricity consumption, helping the poultry farm to avoid high electricity tariffs.

The system will reduce the load on the electricity grid, minimise electricity transport losses, stabilise the energy system while contributing significantly to CO2 emission reductions, it said.

“Because of my high electricity consumption, I was looking for alternatives to reduce my energy costs. EWT came into the picture because of their 750kW rated, DiBT certified machine,” said Herr Pohlkemper, owner of the poultry farm.

“Bringing in the technology, but also the flexibility and critical output levels needed for this project convinced me to go ahead.”

In Germany, the installation of wind turbines is generally limited to areas specially designated as wind energy sites. Small to medium businesses that can prove they will consume more than 51% of the annually generated energy on-site, are excluded from this regulation and can install the turbine outside these areas.

“For us, this first project in Germany showcases there is a need to offset high electricity prices and proves that the self-consumption model works,” said Bas Hoogeveen, sales manager at EWT.

“Germany represents a mature wind energy market and is leading the renewable sector, and we are very proud to be part of it now with smaller-sized projects.”

EWT has a presence across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
