The UK’s Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has commissioned independent insight business BMG Research to conduct an in-depth survey of pig buildings.

BMG Research will use its expertise to quantify the number of pigs housed in various building types, look for trends in age of buildings used, and determine rates of investment.

The research will allow AHDB to understand the future needs of the industry and to support them accordingly.

AHDB is calling for as many producers as possible to take part in its research.

Buildings are key to productivity, health, welfare and, ultimately, the success of the industry. To deliver this, we need buildings to be updated and replaced at a steady rate,” said AHDB head of environment and building Nigel Penlington.

Our knowledge of the types and ages of buildings in use is poor, as is our understanding of what is driving investment and what the barriers to investment might be.”

Once the results have been finalised, AHDB will liaise with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and other stakeholders to inform future policies and activities.

AHDB has assured producers that all research will be confidential and used solely for market research.

Producers interested in participating in the survey can register via its website.
