Appel's fishy hangover breakfast

German canned fish producer Appel has come up with its own take on German ‘Katerfrühstück’ – or ‘hangover breakfast’.

Traditionally, in Germany fish are thought to be a hangover recipe. So Appel has come up with its own answer to hangovers with the rollout of two hangover breakfast varieties.

The company is offering two canned herring options: spicy tomato sauce with cucumbers and onions and ‘heart healthy’ mustard sauce with onions and ham.

Appel uses fish that is MSC certified.

The line will be distributed to German supermarkets, convenience stores and hypermarkets with an RRP of €1.49.

French start-up PAF, which manufactures cold pressed juices, is launching a new smoothie option: Happiness.

The new variety was developed by PAF founder Melanie Merenda and chef Johanna Lepape (World Champion of Sweet Arts) with the aim of providing a healthy and tasty smoothie that would act as a disruptor in the category.

Happiness is high in antioxidants as well as vitamins C and A and contains the “exotic flavours” of mango and passion fruit alongside cardamom.

The smoothie, like PAF’s range of juices, is made in France from organic ingredients. It is cold pressed and stabilised at high pressures to keep the natural nutrients intact.

It will be available at specialist organic retailers throughout France for an RRP of €4.50 for a 245ml bottle.

Iconic champagne brand Laurent-Perrier and snack maker Made For Drink are collaborating to launch a new take on traditional bar snacks: Lotus Root Crisps.

The snack will be available at bars and restaurants across the UK for anyone seeking a “sumptuous snack” to accompany a flute of Laurent-Perrier’s Cuvée Rosé champagne, the company revealed.

The Lotus Root Crisps have been designed to complement the flavours of the Cuvée Rosé. The snacks showcase shichimi togarashi-style spices, which highlight the champagne’s red berry notes. Poppy seeds, ginger, chilli and seaweed provide an “extraordinary depth and complexity of flavour”, the group added.

“We’re always exploring new and original ways to enjoy Laurent-Perrier champagne, and the lotus root crisps are an innovative and delicious pairing for the Cuvée Rosé,” Juliet Elliot, Marketing Controller at Laurent-Perrier UK, commented.

The packaging of these new plant-based snacks is fully biodegradable and compostable.

Lotus Root Crisps will be available at this year’s Taste of London show at Regent’s Park in June, where Laurent Perrier is set to return as the champagne sponsor.

Made for Drink is a family owned gourmet snacking business.

"Based just down the road from our UK head office, Made for Drink are a perfect partner because they share our values of quality, family and sustainability,” Elliot added.

Greek cuisine specialist Apostle is launching a range of Mediterranean spreads in Germany.

The vegetable creams include grilled vegetables & chilli and paprika. The creams are made with yoghurt for a “light” finish. The are positioned as a lower fat alternative to cream cheese and described as “ideal” for dipping or bread. 

The range is free from preservatives and does not contain added sugar.

It will be available throughout Germany for a recommended retail price of €1.59 via supermarket, cash and carry and hypermarket channels. The launch will be supported by an advertising campaign including direct mail, internet and point of sale sampling.

Engineered nutrition - Soylent launches powder in UK
Engineered nutrition - Soylent launches powder in UK

US engineered nutrition group Soylent is launching its original powder product in the UK.

One portion of the powder, which is mixed with water for a nutrition drink, provides 20 grams of protein and 36 essential vitamins and minerals.

Announcing the move, the company stressed it is an “easy to prepare” meal replacement, which provides “maximum nutrition with minimum effort”. Soylent is targeting “meal voids” with a convenient solution that also has a positive impact on health and well-being.

The Silicon Valley product is now available to buy from Amazon UK in both original and cocoa flavours for £24 per back of two 425 g pouches. Each pouch contains five meals, equating to £2.40 per meal.

Soylent powder joins Soylent's ready-to-drink meal in a bottle offering, which was launched in the UK in September.

The powders are vegan and nut-free. Non-dairy ingredients include isolated protein from soy.

Greece’s Bfresh spitiko is collaborating with Torres Import company to bring bfresh spitiko handmade beverages to the Spanish market.

Freshly squeezed bfresh handmade beverages will now be available to cafes, restaurants and bars that are part of the Torres Import network.

The craft beverage is sugar-free and does not contain preservatives.

“Everything about bfresh spitiko is unique, from its production process and selection of sun-kissed fruit to its innovative packaging ensuring fresh, natural taste. We’re committed to providing unparalleled quality to our consumers” said Vasileios Roubis, founder and CEO of bfresh spitiko.

The range includes flavours like organic lemonade with agave & ginger and organic lemonade with agave & chilli.

Jelly Belly is rolling out a new collection under its Jelly Bean Factory brand in the UK: Donut Shoppe Mix.

The company said the new range includes five “creamy” and “smooth” American donut flavours, including glazed, chocolate glazed, strawberry iced, blueberry cake and apple filled.

Donut Shoppe Mix launched on the 1st June and the collection is already stocked in a number of independent stores across the country such as American Candy World on Oxford Street, Mr Simms Traditional Sweet Store, Farrah’s Old Sweet Shop in Harrogate and Chocolate Box in Sheringham. It will enter WHSmiths in July and the brand is also in talks with John Lewis and Sainsburys.

The retail price of the 28 g tin is £3.20 and the bags are £2.50.

European frozen food specialist Iglo, which is owned by Nomad Foods, is launching a Blubb Sticks – spinach sticks coated in breadcrumbs – in Germany.

The company said the brand – a well known childhood offering in Germany focused on spinach – will appeal to “new users” by inspiring consumers with a “practical finger food format”.

Instead of the traditional accompaniment – fried egg and mashed potatoes – the company encourages people to experiment with a dip recipe on the back of the pack.

Announcing the launch, Iglo said that as well as appealing to new consumers it wants to increase purchase frequency of existing shoppers, incrementally growing the frozen spinach category.

Blubb Sticks will be available throughout Germany for an RRP of €1.99 per 284 g package.
