World Butchers’ Challenge postponed due to coronavirus
Due to take place on 4-5 September 2020, the event has been pushed back almost a year to 13-14 August 2021. It will still be held at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California in the US.
In a statement from World Butchers’ Challenge CEO Ashley Gray, details of the postponement were revealed.
It said: “We are filled with the strongest of emotions, not just as we make this announcement but, as we witness our friends from across the globe face a battle none of us could ever have predicted, nor ever imagined. However we know it is the right call.”
Gray said that despite the postponement, work would continue on the event as well as supporting those in the butchery industry affected by the virus. “So as such, we now begin the journey to ensure that the 2021 World Butchers’ Challenge is one which you will all be proud of.
“And right now, more importantly, we turn our focus and efforts to you. In a time of uncertainty we are there to be whatever it is you need. Whether it’s to help tackle challenges that arise for your business as you navigate the coming months. To connect you with others and shine a light on the positives through these tough times. Or, if you need a friend to talk to while in isolation. I, and my team, are here to support you in any way we can.
“We built this community from an event that brought all corners of the globe together – to inspire, to encourage and for the greater good of the industry. The goalposts may have shifted but our resilience collectively, will only strengthen.”
She also praised the host of the event for their support. “Visit Sacramento and the Golden 1 Center, who, in this very tough time, have been amazing in supporting us through this decision. Their ability to land on new dates in a matter of hours was no small feat and we are incredibly grateful.”
Sixteen teams are scheduled to do battle at the World Butchers’ Challenge next year. The event was won by Ireland in 2018 when the competition was held in Belfast, Ireland.
