Vegan cake brand Oggs is launching a plant-based liquid egg alternative in the UK.

Oggs Aquafaba is targeting the home baking market with an egg alternative product.

The egg replacer, aquafaba, is a viscous water produced when chickpeas are cooked. It is able to mimic some of the functional properties of eggs in cooking.

The 200ml cartons are equivalent to four eggs, the company said. The new line will initially be launched in Waitrose this summer, with a further rollout in Sainsbury’s and Asda. The product has an RRP of £1.99.

The ambient, long-life egg alternative is available in Forest Stewardship Council certified packaging. Oggs Aquafaba is also certified by The Vegan Society.

The company is also planning further extensions in food service and manufacturing markets: a 500ml foodservice format is planned for launch this autumn and a and a 5-litre pack size targeting manufacturing is scheduled for launch in early 2021.

“For us, this is the future of food, it’s more sustainable and ethical than the traditional egg alternative. Aquafaba has the potential to replace much of the hidden animal protein in our food chain, from egg white in gluten-free bread to the barn eggs that sadly still reside in many prepared foods on our shelves,” said Oggs founder Hannah Carter.
