Ice cream brands including Hershey’s, Chipwich in FDA product recall

Maryland-based ice cream manufacturer Totally Cool, Inc. has recalled 67 ice cream products from 13 brands after the US Food and Drug Administration discovered the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a sample collected from its ice cream cake production line.

Affected brands include Friendly’s, Abilyn’s Cumberland Farms, Taharka Brothers, AMAFruits, Dolcezza, The Frozen Farmer, Marco, Jeni’s, Yelloh!, Chipwich, LeSalle, and Hershey’s.

While the bacteria has not been detected in the recalled products, there’s a potential for them to have been contaminated given the bacteria’s presence at the facility. An inspection of some lot codes suggests that some of the affected products were manufactured a year ago.

Totally Cool, Inc. is a manufacturing partner of major ice cream brands and also churns out private label products for grocery retailers and wholesale distributors. The company claims its ‘superior manufacturing process, quality ingredients and innovative recipes allow us to make top-notch ice cream products’.

Reacting to the news, Hershey’s said it has already halted sales of its four products in the recall and has asked dealers to safely dispose of them. The company highlighted one of the recalled products were made both at Totally Cool’s factory and Hershey’s own manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania, so only a specific product run is affected.

Crave Better Foods, LLC, maker of Chipwich which has 3 products featured in the recall notice, said its production line is physically isolated and independently operated from the rest of the Totally Cool facility and highlighted that no ingredients, production equipment or finished Chipwich products had been implicated in the recall.

“While this action is unfortunate, it was taken out of an abundance of caution and care for he product and its loyal fans,” the company said in a statement. “Chipwich only sources the highest quality ingredients and maintains stringent production standards to ensure everyone can always find and enjoy their favorite Chipwich variety.”

Baltimore-based Taharka Brothers has two products listed in the recall notice. The firm said these were two of its more popular pint flavors and it had outsourced a single production run of them ‘to meet overwhelming demand’ to a ‘highly respected ice cream manufacturer…and they produce ice cream for many well-known brands’.

“Totally Cool recently discovered a Listeria concern in their ice cream cake production line and the FDA has asked them to issue a recall of all the ice cream they’ve manufactured this year,” Taharka Brothers said in a statement on Facebook. “While no Listeria has been detected in our ice cream, or any of the ice cream produced at Totally Cool, the FDA is requiring a full recall out of an abundance of caution.”

The company said it will manufacture the two recalled products at its factory ‘immediately’ in order to get grocery stores and other retail partners restocked ‘as soon as possible’.

Totally Cool, Inc. said it is conducting its own investigation and has ceased producing and distributing the recalled ice cream products, which are available nationwide in retail stores and for direct delivery.

No illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said.
