Following a series of recalls across the world, European Union food health officials decided in March to remove a sweet called jelly mini-cups from European markets amid fears that an ingredient could cause fatal choking in children.

The ban was formally imposed this week when the Commission Decision 2002/247/EC of 27 March 2002, giving effect to the suspension, was published in the Official Journal. Under article 53(1) of Regulation (EC) 178/2002 the European Commission can suspend the marketing or use of any food which is likely to constitute a serious risk to human health. It has used its powers under this regulation to suspend the placing on the market of jelly confectionery, including jelly minicups containing E 425 konjac, konjac gum or konjac glucomannan .

The Decision states that the Commission will propose to the European Parliament and Council that the miscellaneous additives Directive 95/2/EC be amended in line with this Decision with respect to E 425
