Venison warning
Contamination warnings from the UK food agency highlights yet another food product containing the illegal dye Sudan 1 and issues a follow-up warning about eating venison products containing meat contaminated with the drugs immobilon and revivon.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) alerted environmental health services and directors of trading standards to the news that it had found Sudan 1 in the Mutti SPA brand of Sugo Piu Al Peperoncino sauce 290g.
This product is the latest in a series of foodstuffs found to contain the red-dye, banned under the 'Colours in Food Regulations 1995' act. Sudan 1 is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose.
According to the FSA, the company responsible for the Mutti SPA brand, has removed the product from sale.
In the same week the FSA issued a repeat warning about eating venison products containing meat contaminated with immobilon and revivon drugs, following new information that 'has come to light about the distribution of potentially-affected products'.
An earlier food hazard warning issued to local authority food law enforcers said that potentially-affected meat had been distributed to Sillfield Farm Products, Sillfield Farm, Endmoor, Kendal, Cumbria.
The warning this week claims that the company may have used the potentially-contaminated venison to manufacture three other different products - pheasant and venison sausages, venison and pork sausages, and cooked game pie - sold from a number of UK locations since 11 August 2003, including farmers' markets and county shows.
