The 3M Molecular Detection Assay for E.coli O157 (intended to test raw beef, fruit and produce products) has attained an NF Validation certification from AFNOR Certification.

In order to attain the NF Validation certification, the molecular detection assay had to undergo a multi-phase scientific review. Teams evaluated the product by an independent laboratory, then it was evaluated by a total of 15 different European laboratories in order to confirm reproducibility and repeatability.

Level of confidence

According to Marie-Pierre Copin, 3M Food Safety’s European regulatory affairs specialist, the certification helps give clients an added level of confidence in the test’s accuracy and reliability.

Having such rigorous demonstration of the performance for our technology is really valuable to our customers selling and operating throughout the world,” she said.

Core technology

The Molecular Detection System was first introduced in December 2011, for use by food processors, third-party reference laboratories and other customers. The product uses technology that harnesses isothermal DNA amplification and bioluminescence detection technologies to target and amplify nucleic acid in enriched food and food process samples.

While the science behind the product may sound somewhat complicated, the system is designed to be easy to use. It involves one protocol assay and reportedly requires fewer steps than most tests on the market, and it is said to be easy to train staff to use effectively.

Simple system

The system uses color-coded assay tubes with matching software screens to help simplify the process. The system uses the same testing procedures for E.coli as for testing other pathogens, which simplifies training and reportedly helps reduce the risk of human error.

AFNOR is a France-based organization, consisting of member service companies aground the globe. The organization’s services involve four different areas, certification, standardization, industry press and training.
