PathoGenetix has demonstrated culture-independent identification and strain typing of multiple Salmonella serotypes from enriched food samples using their Genome Sequence Scanning (GSS) technology.

PathoGenetix said their research shows the use of GSS to confirm and identify multiple serovars of Salmonella in enriched food samples in less than five hours.

The study, presented at the 4th American Society for Microbiology (ASM) conference on Salmonella this week,  shows that GSS can be used to infer the serotype of an unknown Salmonella strain, based on the location of the strain on the GSS tree and the identity of its neighbors.

GSS technology will be commercially available in 2014 in the RESOLUTION Microbial Genotyping System.

It comes after the firm announced a partnership with the US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) to evaluate the GSS technology.
