Croatia sausage to receive geographical indication status

Croatia’s meat sector has started reaping the benefits of the country’s European Union (EU) accession in June, with officials lodging papers to ensure EU geographical indication for the Baranjski ‘kulen’ (sausage) from the Baranja region.

This would mean the name cannot henceforth be used to sell foodstuffs in the EU, except for such sausages made traditionally in their Croatian home region. This would prevent unfair competition from other meat producers passing off their sausages as this Croatian delicacy.

Speaking in Zagreb, Vedrana Jelušić Kašić, the Croatia director of the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) noted that the demand for origin-based and high-quality produce is growing.

“The registration provides the opportunity for local producers to market a niche quality product more effectively and to get access to wider distribution networks and European markets, thanks to increased brand recognition,” she said.

Baranjski kulen is a dry-meat salami-style pork sausage incorporating red peppers, which is matured for several months.
