EFSA details antimicrobial resistance in food chain
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has produced an infographic on how it fights the ever-growing problem of antimicrobial resistance in the food chain.

Overuse or misuse of antibiotics has been linked to the emergence and spread of micro-organisms which are resistant to them, rendering treatment ineffective and posing a serious risk to public health.

To combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), EFSA cooperates with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the European Medicines Agency on infections transmitted to humans from animals (zoonoses) and food.

15 projects were launched last week to combat anti-microbial resistance in the build-up to European Antibiotic Awareness Day yesterday.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is estimated to cause some 25,000 deaths each year and more than €1.5bn in healthcare expenses and productivity losses in Europe.

One project dubbed EFFORT (Ecology from Farm to Fork Of microbial drug Resistance and Transmission) will be co-ordinated by Jaap Wagenaar, from Utrecht University in The Netherlands.
