The food firm is recalling a batch of the cheese product due to insufficient levels of sorbic acid, a shortcoming that could lead to foodborne illness or spoilage.

Kraft Foods Group is voluntarily recalling one batch of Velveeta Original Pasteurized Recipe Cheese Product. The boxes of the cheese product reportedly do not contain appropriate levels of sorbic acid; according to Kraft representative Russ Dyer, the condition could leave the product vulnerable to foodborne pathogens or premature spoilage.

Walmart distribution

The amount of product affected by the recall is reportedly small, made on one line during a few hours of production. Dyer said the product was transported to three different distribution centers serving Walmart stores.

Kraft Foods reported the Velveeta in question could have been shipped to Walmarts in up to 12 states in the Midwestern US, including Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. None of the product was shipped outside of the US.

The 260 cases of Velveeta recalled contain 32-ounce cartons of Velveeta’s original flavor. No other sizes, flavors, or varieties of Velveeta have been affected, and no illnesses have been reported.

Previous recalls

Kraft Foods has seen a number of recalls of its food products in the past six months, under various brand umbrellas.

Last month, Kraft recalled 1.2m cases of cottage cheese because the product may have fallen outside acceptable temperature parameters, leaving it vulnerable to spoilage and pathogens. In April, the producer recalled 96,000 lbs. of wieners due to possible undeclared allergens.
