Six abattoirs planned for Anambra state in Nigeria
The governor of Ndi Anambra (Anambra state) in Nigeria has revealed plans to build abattoirs in six regions of the state.
During his inspection of the construction of an abattoir in Amansea, in the Awka North Council Area of Anambra, governor Willie Obiano said the project’s goal was to “sanitise the entire meat slaughtering, processing and distribution system in the state to meet global standards” and that he aimed to replicate the project in six locations across the state.
According to Obiano, the project has the capacity to slaughter 40 cows daily, which was the meat consumption capacity of the entire population in Awka Capital Territory.
He explained that, through the project and the Lynden Poultry Project, his administration intended to combat diseases associated with improper and unhygienic meat processing, by ensuring that meat sold to Ndi Anambra was prepared in the best hygienic format.
Record time for project
At the abattoir in the Awka North Council Area, two main structures housing the Dirty Section where killed cows are left to bleed, the cattle wash section and the wholesale section have been completed. Also completed is the oven section for skin processing, while a major borehole project was still under construction.
Obiano also claimed the government was committed to completing the project within “record time”.
The project, executed by the State Government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, is to be managed by the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export when completed.
The Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mark Okoye added that apart from its health prospects, the abattoir project would create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs.
