Finnish meat processor HKScan has secured a listing with arguably one of Sweden’s largest retail outlets ICA for its Karinäs poultry brand.

The move is to tap the growing Swedish poultry market and marks the launch of farm-born poultry products in Sweden for the very first time.

The poultry meat exported to Sweden is sourced from around 80 of HKScan’s contract farms located mainly in western Finland. HKScan claim that selected Karinäs farms were among the first in the world to adopt the farm-born concept.

HKScan said that Karinäs poultry has been raised without antibiotics since 2009 and gives Swedish consumers access to innovation, as well as high standard of quality, animal welfare and product safety throughout the farm-to-fork chain.

As part of HKScan’s strategic targets, the processor is aiming for growth across its poultry segment.

Swedish consumers have high standards in terms of the quality and origin of the food they eat. I am delighted that HKScan’s Finnish products can meet those demands by bringing responsibly produced Karinäs products to the growing Swedish poultry market,” said HKScan’s EVP market area for Sweden Sofia Hyleen.

We have great expectations for this innovation. The feedback from consumers was very promising. Consumers have had an important role in our concept creation process.”

The poultry products exported to Sweden will be produced at HKScan’s Rauma production unit in Finland.

Consumption of poultry meat is rising steadily both in Sweden and Finland but is still below the EU average in both markets, according to HKScan. Only around 60% of the poultry meat consumed in Sweden is domestically produced, whereas the corresponding figure for Finland is 80%.
