Natural mineral and spring water brands are built on their provenance, making their source a unique part of who they are. But with increasing pressure from man's impact on the planet, how are brands protecting their water for the future?

We’re in Evian-les-Bains: a spa town on the southern side of Lake Geneva, on the edge of the French Alps. Danone’s natural mineral water brand evian has been bottled here since 1826: and the brand is just one of many European bottled waters that thrive on highlighting the source of their water and the story behind their brands.

But with man’s increasing impact on the planet, the need to protect these sources for the future is becoming increasingly urgent. With this, comes the concept of water stewardship.

It takes 15 years for the water evian bottles to filter down from the catchment area to its bottling plant, meaning that – for this brand – the past, present and future are already interlinked.

This video was filmed in Evian-Les-Bains during Zenith’s 2018 Global Bottled Water Congress.

What is water stewardship?

Water stewardship is about businesses understanding the risks they face from water scarcity and pollution, and taking action to help ensure water is managed sustainably as a shared, public resource. It is about the private sector collaborating with governments, other businesses, NGOs, communities, and others to protect shared freshwater resources.’ WWF
