Food safety and quality laboratories are demanding stronger data management and mobile solutions, like those provided by Accelrys.
Food technology firms like Accelrys are launching mobile products designed to connect equipment, data, and staff.

Leif Pedersen (senior vice president of marketing, product management and corporate development for Accelrys) said food technicians and other scientists increasingly are looking for tools that make it easier to integrate and automate their laboratory operations.

This technology makes the next generation of mobile laboratory computing possible,” he said. “It is as easy to use as paper, while offering scientists the opportunity to work more intuitively, efficiently and productively in an integrated laboratory.”

Mobile information tools

Among the laboratory products Accelrys is outlining at Pittcon 2014 is Accelrys Capture. The mobile application is intended to facilitate rapid, paperless recording of laboratory data to boost flexibility and efficiency of information recording and sharing.

Laboratory personnel are asking for stepped-up convenience, but are not willing to sacrifice feature-rich, robust equipment to attain mobility. According to Pedersen, Capture puts into a compact, handheld system the flexibility, integration, and automation capabilities that laboratory personnel are looking for.

Data management

Capture works with informatics software like the company’s Electronic Lab Notebook, which uses a straight-forward interface to securely enter information, review procedures, and capture data from lab instruments. Pedersen said the software and Capture system increase lab efficiency, improve staff morale by letting them focus on the science rather than equipment, enhance data quality, and pare down cycle times.

Accelrys also offers its Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), which facilitates management of data throughout a laboratory operation. Streamlining data collection, reporting, and other functions reportedly saves time and cost of ownership.

Accelrys is showing Capture and other laboratory technology at Pittcon 2014, an annual conference and exhibition dedicated to analytical technology for food and beverage testing, materials analysis, and more. The event is taking place in Chicago March 2-6.
